Different Culture Across the Globe

Written By Aris Abdul Rahman

Culture consists of symbol, norms, language and values. Culture is what we wear, the way we speak, the type of food we eat, our belief in right or wrong and there are actually many more ways to describe culture. “Assalamualikun”, “Hello”, “Hai”, “Sayonara” is culture. Culture can be term in so many ways. The clothes we used to attend certain occasion is also culture.

According to Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in London, the word “culture” comes from Latin “colere,” which means to tend to the earth and grow, or cultivation and nurture.

I would like to point out on one of my favourite part in culture which is the way people dress to attend weddings or funerals. In Malaysia, people attend wedding wearing their traditional costume such as ‘baju melayu’ for the Malays and ‘saree’ for the Indians. Meanwhile in Western country, people who attends wedding normally wears a suit.

Culture differences in leadership styles is also an interesting topic to be discussed. Countries such as Africa, Argentina, and India may have different kind of leadership style. These different style of leadership and understanding often create unexpected misunderstandings. In Japanese they will always respect the elderly person in order for any promotion. Most Japanese stays in one company for their whole life. A junior who comes in with a degree or master qualification needs to starts from the beginning in order to get promoted. Meanwhile in America culture, a qualified and outstanding person, who has passed the interview may be promoted to a higher raking position instead of looking into seniority. Employee at the Japanese hierarchy structure, will always give the senior to speak in meeting or discussion, meanwhile in American culture, they encourage subordinates to speak in meeting and would be able to consider decision making.     When dealing with leadership from Arabic countries, answers such as ‘InsyaAllah’ is uncertain that it’s a YES! because in their culture, they tend to pay high respect to surrounding people and ‘InsyaAllah’ is always used in daily conversation.

Culture can be passed down through generation as we absorbed it from childhood days. It is handed down to us from older generation. The way a person think, feels and taste is also culture. We could also say, it’s the “thinking” and “feeling” part of culture: habits, assumptions, attitudes, desires, values and taste. American’s are big eaters thus ‘Ramli Burger’ won’t be enough to fulfil their appetite. This habits of big eaters are their culture. Meanwhile countries like South Korea that are always sophisticated and fast moving. Technology changes rapidly and citizen need to be aware of changes if not they will be outdated.

Learning a new culture in a nick of time is also challenging. An Orang Asli who used to stay Royal Belum and later settle down in Kuala Lumpur will have lots of difficulties in the beginning. Their customary evaluations and interpretations of Kuala Lumpur may not be same as the actual facts. Imagine them, in a new city trying to find way using any public transportation. They obviously will find difficulties as this new environment need adaptation. In Royal Belum, everything is all laid back and “follow the flow” concept. The only transport they have is their foot and boat. It wouldn’t take long for them to give up and feel frustrated. Thus adapting to new culture is a challenge. On the other hand, Venice, Italy have no cars in the city. You must walk on foot or cycle. This is their culture. If you’re lazy to walk then you’ll not learn about their culture history and will be missing a lot of great monuments.

Language is also culture. Malaysians speak Malays, Brazilian speak Portuguese, British speaks English and the list goes on. The culture is also influence by geographic region. If a tourist is in New Zealand speaking Spanish, there is a possibility that no one will understand. Hence, this Spanish tourist need to communicate using English as language is a dominance factor there. In Latin America, citizens enjoy the weekend differently compare to other places of the world. They spend too much time on drinking, partying and gathering after a long 5 days of work. Comparing to the Japanese, they are workaholic and never stop until the problem is solved.

In conclusion, culture is vast and different countries have different believe, norms and ritual.  It’s an opportunity to learn new culture, meet new people, learn new technology and share with them your culture. Culture appears to have become key in our globalised world. Even the internet can’t conglomerate all this at one point. The ethnically diverse societies, the religion makes up a culture. Culture is a huge diversity!

The Future of Facebook

Written by Nuremy Khairi

Facebook was launched by Marc Zuckerberg in February 2004. At that time nobody could predict what the future holds for this new networking site. Let’s face the facts that Facebook has helped many of us become writers in our very own way. It has developed people’s mind and capabilities in conveying what they wanted to say or how they feel at that very moment.

5

One of the interesting key features of Facebook was the exclusivity. In order to sign in a Facebook account, you need to have an email address at one of the school in the network. First it started in Harvard and extended beyond that. It took over Myspace which was quite famous at that time. In 2007, the Facebook platform was introduced which gave developers a chance to create application for the network.

Fast forward until today, Facebook is still the go to networking website for many of us. Obviously Facebook has become a platform not only for news, social networking and also people who would want to introduce their businesses.

What would the future be for Facebook? Many would have their own views and thoughts on this, but the reality is the giant social networking site is pushing their product towards virtual reality, the expansion prominence of live video, Facebook is trying to redefine its product as not just an outlet where you unfold all your life aspects or a place to upload photos but beyond all that. Facebook is not just happy with owning the most distraction from your phone. It would prefer to be the place where the most memorable and meaningful life actually happen.

The more enticing Facebook products become, the more value they have for advertisers. The famous board member, Marc Andreessen’s said the software for Facebook will open up untold business model.  Will people need virtual clothing to wear on their journey through virtual worlds? Will Workplace spawns an ecosystem of third-party apps as robust as pants’?

In order to know where Facebook is headed in the future the Founder himself wrote in his February manifesto:

“Our goal is to strengthen existing communities by helping us come together online as well as offline, as well as enabling us to form completely new communities, transcending physical location.”

SIX IMPORTANT Lessons Learned while ‘Backpacking’

Written by Farah Hanani Sukri

You need to experience backpacking at least once in your lifetime to get out of your comfort zone. As the saying goes, “Life can be like a rollercoaster, sometimes you need to go through hard times alone.” By backpacking, you can finally discover your true strengths and weaknesses. Here are six (6) important lessons that one can get from being a backpacker:

  • Become more organized

The first thing that will change you is, you will become more organized, more than before as you yourself will have to arrange all your clothes, toiletries, and other items properly into a bag pack. Usually, when you are backpacking, you will want to minimize your carry-ons and not bring more than two carriers.

In addition to that, you also become independent, especially when you decide to travel to an unfamiliar territory. From this experience, you will learn basic survival skills because firstly, you will need to think about transportation. This is very important because you need to think on how you want to go from one place to another. Secondly, you need to do research on what are the must-do’s and the attractive places you should visit. So, you should have an itinerary and other materials that will help you achieve this. It is a MUST for you to do some research about the place that you will go to. Automatically, these will help you become more organized, as you know what you want and how to plan for it.

  • Become more open minded

When you travel, you will experience new culture and meet new people. Somehow, it is an opportunity for you to learn their culture and beliefs. It is not for you to judge their culture, like it being weird, just because you are not familiar with their culture. You need to respect their differences, as you are an outsider.

The value gained from backpacking is, it gives you a new perspective where you can experience it ‘live’ rather than just reading and hearing it from someone. The act of being somewhere you are not familiar with allows you to fully immerse yourself and appreciate new horizons, people and culture. Their clothes used for different events are especially interesting to learn. You just need to have the courage to start a conversation, and this will eventually help you make new friends from other cultures, giving you a better understanding of their practices, turning all the curiosities into discoveries.

  • Become more independent

Some people think backpacking is difficult to do because you need to prepare lots of thing before you start backpacking. But somehow, I believe that you can overcome this if you one hundred percent prepared, by doing the necessary research on the country, as it will ease your journey.

Moreover, single travelling can also be considered as an ability to be alone but not lonely, which means that you will experience lots of things during your backpacking journey, but at the same time, you also will learn to accept the hard times because you know that only YOU can help yourself in difficult times. Automatically, it helps you to think creatively to solve a problem. I believe            that people who often travel think more creatively and are better at adjusting to new environments because only you will rescue yourself.

  • Overcome fear/conflict and be more confident

Backpacking is an activity that takes you out from you comfort zone by experiencing the unfamiliar. Before this, if you are fearful of something, you tend to avoid them. But when you are a backpacker, you need to overcome your fears if you want your travels to go as planned. For example, you have anxiety when   communicating with strangers because you are an introvert. You need to overcome this as a backpacker, to make yourself confident of your new surroundings. If you are lost at ‘nowhere’, by hook or by crook, you will need          to start asking people where you are. Do not feel afraid if they do not       understand you, because technology can assist you. You can show them pictures of building, park, etc. to find your way back. This one experience for instance, can teach you to become more confident in facing people, and help you overcome personal conflicts.

  • Appreciate time

You have already prepared the itinerary for your backpacking trip and you will follow      the flow just to make sure you will not miss doing things and visiting worthy places. This at the end, helps you to manage time and be appreciative of every second. If you delay and deviate from your plans, you may need to skip to other activities and miss the attractive places you should have visited. This is very wasteful because the point of backpacking is to experience something new and see something new in your life.

  • Utilize things

You will start to realize that every single thing is very important compared to the time when you are in your comfort zone. Maybe before, you did not need to use them because you had a variety of options, but when you are backpacking, you have limited options. You will only realize its value and how much it will help you during your backpacking travels.

The Reality Television Programs in Malaysia.

Written By Amirah Sohaimi

Reality TV is typically defined as a non-fictional programming in which portrayal is presumed to present current, historical events or circumstances. The production itself must be a realistic account.  Generally included in this category are news and public affairs programming, interviews, talk shows, entertainment, or news programming, documentaries, real world events, police or emergency worker drama, and live quiz shows.

Over the years, the media industry in Malaysia has witnessed a growing and troubling trend of media ownership concentration and consolidation, which was triggered by economic and to some extent, political reflections. The Government, in general, supports the Islamic religious establishment and infuses Islamic values into the administration and official policy of the country. The centralization of Islam occurred most extensively under the Mahathir Government, starting from about the mid-1980s onwards.

In a multicultural society, media in Malaysia has some of the toughest censorship laws; and it is becoming very challenging for media to produce shows in terms of breaking the boundaries of the religious rules. However, with globalization the West, it clearly has influenced the Malaysian media industry. Malaysia has imported a lot of reality television shows from the West. Although there are still restrictions on what can be shown on the local television, but the changes are a huge step in the Malaysian media industry.

When we are exposed to a wide range of imported western TV programs, to some extent we can see a change in the pattern of our daily lives. But this does not mean that Malaysians are 100% influenced by the Western culture.

Although Malaysians have expressed their views on reality TV, there are signs of conflict that comes from other critics such as academics, politicians, entertainers and even from ordinary citizens. Some do agree that the lack of Asian values portrayed in the content of the local reality TV programs is the cause of the erosion of Asian values in today’s community.

We must realize that conflicts and dilemma may arise between people who wish to accept foreign cultures and those who wish to maintain their traditional cultures and reject the external values and beliefs. We must accept the criticisms, comments and arguments with regard to the positive and negative values portrayed in the reality TV programs. In the end, we are all hand-in-hand promoting Malaysia’s nation-building exercises towards a developed nation.

written by Eric Rosli

Does the term ‘medical tourism’ is unusual or strange to you? Medical tourism can be defined as an activity that one makes in travelling and hosting a tourist stays for one or more nights at the destination region in the purpose of maintaining, improving or restoring health through medical intervention.

Medical tourism is rapidly developing throughout the country and Malaysia in particular has become one of the popular destinations due to our competitive medical fees and modern medical facilities. Although medical tourism in Malaysia is still growing, but looking at its pace and the path its taking now can make it through the market due to its strong public health care delivery system in that country being regarded as one of the best in the Asia-Pacific region.

But why Malaysia you asked? Well, Malaysia has a lot to offer when it comes to medical tourism e.g. preferred health care travel destination due to friendly and highly professional medical staff, internationally accredited hospital, world-class hospitals with the state-of-the-art medical facilities, affordable costs of procedures, English-speaking population, safe and friendly environment for visitors.

Under the Ministry of Health Malaysia, an agency called Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) helped to raise Malaysia on par as the world’s class healthcare services. The MHTC has opened MHTC Concierge and Lounge in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Penang International Airport (PIA) as the first points of contact for many travelers on their health journeys in Malaysia. Since 2011, the healthcare travelers has been increasing from 643,000 to 859,000 in 2015.

On that note, in many years to come we do hope that medical tourism may keep developing and improving in Malaysia and will positioning the country to be an attractive destination for not only commercial but also medical tourism with the hope to gain lucrative benefits.

‘LIVE’ ON FACEBOOK, ANTICIPATING TREND?

Remember when Facebook just about updating status, posting pictures, and adding friends? Back in 2004 when Facebook was launched, everyone went crazy over it instantly. Everyone wanted to have their own account so that they will be in a so called ‘in trend’.

As time goes by, Facebook keeps on adding and improving their features. However, the increase the features, doesn’t mean that they are also providing a pleasant platform for all users. Recently, there has been a rising issue about one of the current trending Facebook features that is Live streaming. Since Facebook launched this feature, the company has been hit by several high profile storms after people repeatedly used it to broadcast violent crimes.

Facebook users can choose the mode of update they want to post, either to post a photo or video, tag people in their post, add a feeling or what they are doing and also check into a location. Meanwhile, live streaming is basically when they want to update the post by broadcasting or ‘Go Live’, which is somehow a more effective and ‘satisfying’ since they will able to see who is viewing their broadcast, as well as a stream of real-time comments.

However, good thing also comes with the bad ones. Since it was launched back in August 2015, there have been a lot of violent cases reported all over the world. Recently, on April, a young father from Thailand broadcasted himself murdering his 11 month-old daughter by hanging the girl from a building in a live video on Facebook before killing himself right after that.

In Chicago, several young African-American adults broadcasted them bullying and tormenting a mentally disabled teen live on Facebook with the teen being tied up in a room with duct tape across his mouth and cut off that boy’s cloth.

According to Dr Maat Lewis, an associate professor and former deputy chair and director of counselling services in the Department of Counselling and Human Services at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, those who commit violence, homicide or suicide in Facebook want others to feel their pain, which is somehow caused by mental illness or interpersonal conflict.

However, even after these series of bad incidents, instead of shutting down this Live Streaming, Facebook will just add add 3,000 more content reviewers and invest in tools to help remove objectionable content more quickly. Is doing this will decrease the violent acts broadcast on Facebook? Violence is happening every day, it is normal. But seeing the act being broadcasted and published until the point it becomes normal is absolutely not healthy, it is sick.

VIRAL CONTENT AS MARKETING STRATEGY?

written by Eric Rosli

Do you realize that with only one picture can make someone become as famous as celebrity? With only one viral video can boost someone’s business to the peak? These are the few great things about internet that make us addicted to it!

However, internet is more useful and beneficial if we use it in right way. Business, for instance. The existence of social media really creates a miracle for those who are running online business. As we know, online business industry is booming from day to day thanks to social media and a good businessperson will fully utilize them to boost performance and profit.

Sometimes even without a proper advertisement strategy, one’s business still can be as grand as those who advertise theirs at television. How this is possible? It is a matter of ‘trending’ and ‘viral’ thingy that make this possible.

‘Nasi Lemak Pondan’, for example. Because of the nasi lemak is named with ‘pondan’, it makes thing crazy and people keep on making it viral by posting it everyday. The same goes to ‘Nasi Lemak Anak Dara’. ‘Anak dara’ brand makes a big difference for nasi lemak although the taste might be as same as nasi lemak made by any mak cik in Malaysia. Malaysian loves this kind of controversial things and luckily it has a huge impact for them. Their businesses are improving and getting more customers day by day!

Also not to forget, last year there was this one woman named Bella became viral after she lodged police report because frustrated with this one local slimming product she used. She claimed that the product wasn’t work on her and what made thing interesting was how she bashed all local, Malay products. Her video went viral and people keep on posting negative comments as a feedback to the video. Unfortunately, it turned out that the police report was a lie and she just did it to market the product to the public.

It is frustrating, right? That is how powerful viral contents are. Every online marketer dreams of having that perfect viral marketing campaign that reaches an incredibly wide audience, far beyond the brand’s own reach, and connects with people across the world. This is how online seller do their job every day.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Faq4wMlr9t4

In addition, media influencer such as vlogger and blogger are also the other reason of viral contents being spread in social media. If someone is famous enough and has her own group of followers, it means she/he is capable enough to make a product review and of course is paid for it. This is one of the fastest way to promote the product other than controversial viral issues such as nasi lemak and slimming product.

However, viral contents are not supposed to be looked as an ‘unhealthy’ way of marketing strategy. Sometimes, it also helps those who are running a small business such as small street cart when people spread about those businesses it will increase the number of customers.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS FOR MEN

written by Eric Rosli

Society is stereotyping breast cancer as a norm for women since it is more likely be linked as one of the disease that be diagnosed in women compare to men. In addition, breast cancer also been recognized as one of the dangerous threats to women’s health. Therefore, if we can see, there are many events or awareness campaigns that focusing on breast cancer in women rather that men, which makes many people to have this stereotype which lead them to ignore the chances of men been diagnosed with breast cancer not seriously even though there are less than 1% of all breast cancer are develop in men.

However, there are cases of breast cancer that involve men even though the number of cases is rare. Therefore, the need of providing them with information about breast cancer is high, so that they will have a full exposure about the disease from the symptoms until how to treat it. Breast cancer in men usually been detected as a lump that occurs underneath the nipple and areola. And due to the lack of awareness among them, it makes men are likely to take the lump not seriously and ignore the possibility for the lump to become a breast cancer which will cause a delay in getting treatment.

Therefore, when they started to notice a lump or anything that unusual about their breast, they should get professional advice about it because an early detection of breast cancer can increase the options of treatment and eventually increase the chances of being a survival. Besides the lack of awareness, the feeling of embarrassment to being label as one of the breast cancer patient which primarily been diagnose in women, also makes men tend to ignore the hard lump that occurs.

Therefore, there is an urge of more campaign been conduct that are focusing on giving out information and awareness towards the breast cancer in men so that men will feel more comfortable in doing the diagnosis and treatments procedure for breast cancer as breast cancer are not only been detect in women but also men.

Robophobia

Written by Illyana Helmy

Robophobia is an anxiety disorder which makes a person has an irrational fear of robots, drones or any other robot-like mechanics. It often results a panic attack and always can be triggered by certain stimuli or situation. For instance, it happens while viewing a robot, talking about robots or being near to a robot. The sufferer finds their anxiety levels rise when they are near most autonomous machine especially the human-looking robots. The term robophobia comes from the Czech word which is robota. Robota means “drudgery” and Greekphobos means “fear”. People who are diagnosed with this illness can find the disorder hard to live with. This is because, they will go to great lengths to avoid robots and any situation that may trigger their panic and anxiety. Furthermore, they also will avoid certain machines and computer and much prefer hardwired telephones over using a smartphones. Nowadays, robots can perform many human tasks, often more deftly than we could manage. It also saves us from having to carry out boring tasks and they could be revolutionising many professions. However, when anyone mentions robots, if we are reminded of a movie in 1982 named Blade Runner, it depicts a story of genetically engineered replicants, basically human-like robots, for sure our reaction is to feel so anxious and suspicious due to the frightening scenes from movie itself. There are many reasons we so frightened of robots. Firstly we worry that robots will take over all of our jobs, leaving us out of work and also without a livelihood. For instance nowadays we can see the introduction of driverless cars which has threaten the jobs of professional drivers.

humanrobot
Source: http://robotschampion.com

Next, we fear that robots will “take over us” and at the end of the day we will lose control of them. Robots intelligence has the ability to acquire knowledge which we can apply them as necessary. Today robots already show remarkable behavioural and cognitive intelligence. Some robots appear to have emotional intelligence. Such as the famous robot named Ava is the android in sci-fi film Ex Machina says Ava can recognise human emotions but she cannot feel them. Thirdly, we worry one day we won’t be able to tell the difference between a human-like robot (an android) and a real human. Kurt Gray and Daniel Wegner at the North Carolina University showed “we are not particularly bothered by what robots ability to act, until its only when we believe they can feel and sense”. Lastly, advances in technology are very fast that most of us haven’t kept up, and it makes us feel anxious and unsettled. Thus, the only way to alleviate our fears is to educate yourself by learning the terminology and always keep up with what’s happening as best as you can. Although we will use robots in our daily lives, it would be preferable if their creators come up with versions that don’t look like actual human. Professor of Robot Ethics, Alan Winfield explained on how robots have implications for wealth that will be distributed. Most important is we must prioritise not only the technological development of our robots but the ethical programming as well. Meanwhile Professor Stephen Hawking summed up during 2015 Zeitgeist Conference in London he said

“Computers will overtake humans with AI within the next 100 years. When that situation happen, we need to make sure the computers have the same goals with ours”.

Salute to the Toastmasters!

Toastmasters Internationalis a term that is still quite foreign to Malaysians especially the university students. From a quick survey, only 5 out of 20 university students know the word toastmasters and what it is all about. A little bit on the history of toastmasters, according to toastmasters.org, the journey began when Ralph C. Smedley, an education director at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) organized a series of speaking club. At that time, he feels that the men in the community need to learn the essentials of how to speak in order for them to conduct meetings, program planning, and other skills to help them in a social environment

The first toastmasters meeting was first conducted on the 24th March 1905. In general, we know that the term ‘toast’ is used whenever a person wanted to give toast at an occasions. Smedley take the concept and created the club’s name; ‘Toastmasters’. Today, after 90 years since it started, the club is still standing strong and it is now known as the ‘Toastmasters International’.

People with basic knowledge on toastmasters usually will generalize toastmasters club as a place where people practice public speaking. It is not just a place for people to practice public speaking, it is the place that people can learn lots of skills that will definitely benefit them. Public speaking is not everyone’s cup of tea. Not everyone is good in talking in front of people. Toastmaster will definitely help people that have difficulties in that area. It will give you the skills like how to prepare the speech, how your body should speak (body language), what kind of tone you should use and many more.  Once you have mastered it, it will then give you the confidence when speaking in front of people and how you present yourself to the world.

Speaking from experience, you are also in the learning process whenever you are watching other people speak during toastmaster’s session. Different people have different styles of presenting their words and from that you get a piece of their skills. Furthermore, you will meet people that might have the same difficulties and the same mission as you. This will make it easier for you to practice and be more comfortable as you know that you will be supporting each other to do well.

Toastmaster is not a boring place to be. It might sound nerdy and too academic but it is a fun place to be that has lots of fun activities. And you know that it is the place that will make you a confident and a better communicator.

Once you become a Toastmasters member, you are always welcome to attend any toastmasters meeting in more than 15,900 clubs and in more than 142 countries all over the world. To date, there are more than 345,000 memberships in Toastmasters International Club. You will never be alone because there are always Toastmasters members anywhere you go.
